Nestled in the heart of Southern Rhône

The estate is situated in the core of the wine region of Southern Rhône, France. It has been named after the eponymous river Rhône, which had been deemed for centuries as the wine artery along which the Ancient Romans started with serious development of viticulture, as well as the production of quality wines such as “Falernian” – a renowned wine in Ancient Rome.

Château de Gourdon is surrounded by picturesque vineyards straddling an area of 50 ha, rampant on the gentle slopes of the Côtes du Rhône and Côtes du Rhône Villages appellations at the very border with the world renowned wine sub-region of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, or “The Pope’s new castle”, which got its name at the time when Avignon had become the residence of Pope Clement V in the XIV century.

The Château de Gourdon estate is located in the southern area of the Rhone Valley in France, near the town of Bollène.

The first vines on this location date back to 1870. Ever since many noble families have poured their affection and dedication into producing fine wines that proudly bear the C.D.R. designation, staying true to the tradition of utmost respect of nature and maintaining the magnificence of the castle. Today, Château de Gourdon builds on this grand legacy to create even more prosperous future. New investments and energy are streamed into production of modern wines in keeping with the tradition of quality and unique character.

The vineyards represent an integral part concentrated around the castle. They are planted on slopes with southern exposition, which enables the exposure of the grapes to the sun during the whole day, while the Mistral wind, which is often present, helps the grapes remain healthy and less susceptible to diseases. These factors, combined with the sandy soil, provide for high quality grapes from Château de Gourdon vineyards during every harvest, which, in turn, contributes to the making of complex wines with pronounced aromaticity and character.

Our winery produces wines of several varieties, including Grenache Blanc, Viognier, Grenache Noir, Syrah and Carignan, as well as Clarette, Roussane, Marsanne, Cinsault and Mourvedre.

The vineyards span over an area of 50 ha located around the castle, size that allows to grow the grapes in complete accordance with nature, practicing sustainable agriculture. Vines are treated only if necessary, without use of herbicides, while soil cultivation is extremely limited to activities that prevent weather related grape diseases.

The strong influence of the Mediterranean climate enables full maturity of the grapes. The light breeze coming from the north, along the Rhône, reduces the temperature in the summer evenings, providing the grapes with sufficient natural acids, as well as making them less susceptible to diseases.

The sandy and nutrient poor soil provides the wines with intense fruitiness, while the silicate and limestone components of the soil affect the irradiation of the vine’s fruit zone and the root system extending toward the zone rich in nutrients and minerals, which provide the wines with an enhanced level of polyphenols and specific minerality.

During the summer, in order to prevent heavy irrigation than can decrease the quality of the grapes, the vines are refreshed by cultivation that is done several times. On average, each year production reaches 35 hl of wine per ha. The low yields enable high quality wines.

Harvesting is done by hand or mechanically depending of the age of the vines and harvest lasts several weeks, since grapes are picked only when they have matured to perfection.

Château de Gourdon has vineyards with high quality Grenache Blanc, Viognier, Grenache Noir, Syrah and Carignan, as well as Clarette, Roussane, Marsanne, Cinsault and Mourvedre.

Blessed with the natural conditions, Old-World winemaking is merged with the New World enthusiasm at Château de Gourdon to introduce wines with complexity and pronounced character.

The winegrowing had always been guided by the principles of utmost respect for the nature and the vines. To the present day, many of the plots have old vines that produce high quality wines that may be tasted in the cellars of the Château’s winery.

Almost all of the wines we produce are a blend of several varieties created by our experienced oenologists.

The perfect symbiosis of the elements, the characteristics of the soil, sand, vine stumps over 40 years old (Vieilles Vignes), as well as the soft tannins are the advantages of our elegant wines from the plots of La Marron, La Vernes, Lade Ganess, etc.

With every harvest, we produce complex wines with pronounced aromaticity and character. Our wine portfolio has been completely revived and includes several white, red and rose wines that are receiving recognition on renowned international wine competitions.

Such are the gold medal awarded to Vase de Pierre 2017 at the summer tasting session of the largest specialized wine competition in Germany – Mundus Vini 2019, as well as the double gold medal awarded to our red wine Terrasse à l’Ombre 2018 at the China Wine & Spirits Best Value 2020 held in Hong Kong.

At “Concours des Vins à Orange 2020”, the white wine Terrasse au Soleil 2018 and Vase de Pierre 2018 red won gold medals. Silver medal was presented to another one of our reds – Jolie Balade 2018.
